Lectures, cultural choices and contact group time

Dear reader,
This week the students have been introduced to the cultural subjects for the next term and have been to a lecture with Sanne Søndergaard. In addition, we have been focusing on pupils' well-being by spending more time in contact groups.

Visit by Sanne Søndergaard
Last Thursday we had our first lecturer. Sanne Søndergaard came to talk about life as a teenager and it was put into perspective that the dear parents do not always remember how difficult it is to be a teenager. There was talk of the very serious problems that some teenagers go through, but there was also room for the less serious aspects of teenage life, which gave room for a laugh around the rows of chairs.

Introduction to cultural studies
Students also faced some tough decisions this week. Preparations were made for the big cultural introduction in the multi-purpose hall, where students had the opportunity to hear about the different subjects. There were opportunities to learn about Indian culture, apartheid in South Africa and the people and nature of Greenland. Both teachers and pupils made suggestions for new cultural subjects, and pupils' suggestions for cultural trips to Greenland and Australia were particularly well received. The suggestions are here

In the next days, most subjects will be presented again in the assemblies and on Saturday afternoon, there will be a presentation for the parents. Family Weekend. The final vote will take place on Wednesday, after which parents will have to confirm the young people's choices. We are looking forward to seeing how the students are divided between the different cultural subjects this year.

A little extra contact group time
We chose to take time out of the schedule to have a good chat in the contact groups. The students had time to talk to their contact group teacher on a two-week basis to put their finger on the pulse and tell how they thought their first weeks at Ranum had gone. In addition, they also talked about what they will spend contact group time on; kayaking, pancake baking, badminton matches etc. The possibilities are many and it is only the imagination that sets the limits. It is important that students feel comfortable in their contact groups as it is a constant throughout the school year. In one of the contact groups, it was also emphasised that the contact group teacher has an important role and contributes to the well-being of the contact group.

"He's good at getting us to socialise, even if we sometimes forget we don't speak the same language. He helps us out a bit and reminds us to remember to speak English. We also feel really comfortable because he helps us understand that there's nothing to be nervous about or embarrassed about if you're going to make mistakes. And he's also just really entertaining."

Family weekend and Vilsted Lake Run
Later today, we'll be joined by lots of lovely parents and siblings as we kick off our family weekend. Parents will be able to join us for the various profile classes and enjoy the company of other parents and students. Tomorrow morning the Vilsted Lake Run is on the programme - and it's going to be fantastic. We are still hoping that the weather gods will change their minds and send sunshine over Ranum, so please come and cheer on the runners and see who crosses the finish line first.

New Ranum Magazine:  We have also published this year's Ranum Magazine this week. We are happy to send you some magazines if you want to help distribute them, just contact the office.

Next week
This coming week we will focus on sustainability and try to live even more sustainably. For example, we will have two meat-free days and turn off the lights a little earlier than usual. Next week we will also have some very special guests visiting us, as it is Friends Weekend. Next week, students will have the opportunity to invite their friends to visit the afterschool to see where they spend all their time this school year.

Afterschools Day on 30 September
On 30 September, we open the doors to the Day of After-Schools. We are ready to introduce you to cultural subjects, academic subjects, travel and what life at Ranum Efterskole College is like. Students will be on hand to show you around, answer your questions and tell you about their everyday lives. We look forward to seeing you.

We still have places available for this school year! If you know someone who would love a year at an afterschool school, we'd love to hear from you!

Greetings all of us at
Ranum Efterskole College
