CHINA

The third largest country in the world - with 5,000 years of history, the second largest economy and modern life.
Travelling to China offers a wealth of unforgettable experiences. We'll hike the Great Wall, which winds like a 21,196 kilometre long snake up and down the mountains. We can try to get an impression of the more than 800 buildings that make up the Forbidden City - China's imperial palace for over 500 years. We'll also visit The Bund in Shanghai, where we'll experience the city's impressive skyline, tall skyscrapers and vibrant modern city life. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to experience everyday Chinese life when you stay with a local host family during our visit to the twinning school.

We will visit three cities in China: the capital Beijing, the cosmopolitan megacity Shanghai and the romantic water city Suzhou. Shanghai has many nicknames such as “New York of China”, “Pearl of the Orient” and “Paris of the East”. In this “magical city” you will experience modern city life up close: you can order food, medicine, shampoo - almost anything - directly from your phone, even in the middle of the night, and a robot can deliver it to your hotel room. Most vehicles on the streets are electric and the city is a centre for both fashion and art. In the major shopping districts you'll find the world's most famous brands and the latest products.

Suzhou, known as Venice of the East and The capital of silk, offers completely different experiences. Here you can see the silkworms and learn how the fine silk is produced. The city is also famous for its beautiful landscapes: ancient water towns, elegant gardens, Taihu Lake, Shangfang Mountain, and its many temples and pagodas. In Suzhou, we visit our partner school, Overseas Chinese Academy of Concord Suzhou - the best private school in the area. Here you'll have the opportunity to stay with your own host family and participate in a range of exciting activities.

You'll have the chance to teach English to kindergarten children, learn kung fu, play an ancient Chinese musical instrument, visit a modern factory and watch robots at work. You can also taste various local specialities - and maybe even try your hand at making classic Suzhou snacks and tea snacks.

It will be an experience not to be missed!

Academic programmes

China is not only a destination, but also a subject several afternoons a week. You shouldn't just choose China for travelling, but also because you want to learn Chinese language and culture.

Chinese culture is both the past with emperors and Kung fu, silk and temples, but also Chinese medicine, family life, work, environment and politics. Some of the teaching will take place in class, others may be cooking or a weekly game of Tai Chi and Kung fu. We also choose two UN World Goals as our project themes. In Goal 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities", students will choose an area they are interested in. It could be how the Chinese protect the cultural relics in modern cities. In Goal 3 "Health and well-being" you can investigate, for example, why do the Chinese eat many dishes in the evening (it can be 5 dishes for a family of 3 men) but don't get fat.
If you are fascinated by the East - from imperial palaces to skyscrapers, from cooking to Kung fu, from natural beauty to smart technology and if you want to get to know the Chinese youth, see how ordinary Chinese people live their daily lives, then choose China.
