1 Home Visit, 9 Worlds and 21 Subjects

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Ranum Efterskole's newsletter. This week has been all about TEBO, but it has also been marked by lots of project work, football atmosphere - and the first snow of the school year! In this week's newsletter you can read about bridge building, project assignments, the weekend's Full Host programme - and even a little Christmas adventure sneaks in.

Then there is nothing more to write than:

Happy reading, to all of you out there!

The snow has come to Ranum

On Monday morning, students arrived to a snow-covered Ranum, and school breaks were often spent playing snowball and making snow angels. Enjoy the amazing pictures of a white Ranum πŸ™‚

TEBO

TEBO stands for Thematic Business Bridging and OSO, and this week it passed its baptism. All Danish 10th grade students have been distributed to 8 different worlds. Each world has a theme and overall industry area, within which the students are this week on bridging and company visits. The students therefore choose the world based on their future career aspirations.

One example is the Blue World, which introduces students to careers such as shipmaster, engineer, marine biologist or fisherman. The blue students visited MARTEC, a maritime and polytechnic training centre that offers all maritime training in Denmark.

Here, the students have, among other things, been on a trip in the blue wave, worked on communication and rope ceiling, as well as disassembling and then assembling a valve. In addition to MARTEC, the students also went on a bridging course at Himmerlands Erhvervs- og Gymnasieuddannelser.

Now that the week is over, it's time to take a look at the OSO tasks. OSO stands for Obligatory Self-Selected Task, and is handed in by groups formed within each world. They could be a video, a written assignment or a board that students hand in.

In addition to the 8 Danish worlds, there is also no. 9: Compulsory Careers Project. This is only available for international students.

Project assignment in 9th grade

While our 10th graders have been on bridge building, our 9th graders have had project week. They have been working in groups on different subtopics, under the main topic "The Changing World". The project is interdisciplinary, embracing a wide range of compulsory subjects in Year 9. The week started with a Word course, where students also learned about source material processing and source use.

During the week, students conducted interviews, completed questionnaires and held polls at school to collect data for their assignments. In addition, students have had ongoing tutoring, with teachers helping them with everything from comma spelling to questionnaire design. Groups have chosen topics ranging from drinking culture, fashion's impact on climate and the war in Ukraine to abortion and inflation. The projects will culminate in a written assignment from each group, as well as a creative product to be presented at the oral exam on Tuesday.

World Cup and FIFA tournament

We can't get enough of football here at school. World Cup matches are watched with great support, and have proved to be a nice break in an otherwise school-heavy week.

In addition, there is a FIFA tournament for the students, which is held continuously with the World Cup.

"The day Santa disappeared from Ranum"

It happened in the days that Christmas had come to Ranum. The snow had fallen, Christmas decorations were hung up and Christmas music could be heard everywhere in the corridors. There was a magical atmosphere in the small snow-covered village. In fact, pupils and teachers had got so into the Christmas spirit that it could be felt all the way from the rooms at the far end of Ranumhus to the upper corridors of Kærhuset. The school was bathed in idyll, the pupils in a kind of Christmas ecstasy, when the accident occurred on Friday morning: Santa Claus had disappeared! After adorning our auditorium, and a brief visit to the Ballroom, he was no longer to be found. The magic of Christmas had instantly vanished, and the joy was slowly seeping out of the school's otherwise safe confines.

Despondent and lost, head cook Jesper wrote out to the staff, a cry for help: find our lovely Santa Claus, so we can once again maintain Christmas peace here at Ranum Efterskole! The magical Christmas house fairy Karina had seen the dear Santa Claus in the banquet hall, but alas, he was no longer to be found here. So now we need all the little Santa girls and boys around the school to look for the White Santa. That way, the Christmas spirit can be saved and the magic can once again take over the hallways.

Yes, alas, our beloved Santa Claus has sadly disappeared from school. The suspicion that he has been kidnapped and placed in a student room is high, so the weekend teachers have their case too. We'll be back next week with more news. (hopefully good) in the case of The Vanishing Santa!

Full Host weekend in Silkeborg and Aarhus

Full Host visited Silkeborg and Aarhus during the long weekend. The programme included a visit to Art-By-Me in Aarhus, and a visit to Salling Rooftop with mocktails. In addition, the students went on a trip to Himmelbjerget. In Silkeborg, under the clear sky and snowy forest floor, the students found the troll Stærke Storm. Last, but certainly not least, the Full Host students went for a walk in the Randers Rainforest.

A home visit in Silkeborg

When Katrine (class 21-22) and her family spotted the REC bus in their neighbourhood in Silkeborg, they spontaneously invited the 20 Full Host students from our current class to visit their home for some cosiness, pampering and (heart) warmth. Amazing how the REC community can 'reach out'!

22 subjects - and we present them all!

The cultural studies process has ended and the students have had to vote for the last time on which journey they want to go on. So hold on to your keyboards, snowballs, carrots, hats and, most importantly, your glasses, because we can now reveal all the CULTURAL TRAININGS that this year's student teams have voted through:

🌍 Bonaire, Coral Restoration

🌍 Brazil

🌍 Thailand, Sailing

🌍 South Africa, Cape Town

🌍 Namibia, Wildlife Conservation

🌍 Panama, Wildlife Conservation

🌍 Cuba

🌍 Japan

🌍 Taiwan, Chinese Cuisine and Culture

🌍 Road Trip, USA

🌍 Turkey

🌍 South Korea

🌍 Texas, Homestay

🌍 Nepal, High Trek

🌍 Nepal, Culture

🌍 Europe, Road Trip

🌍 Malaysia

🌍 Bali

🌍 Canada, Ski and Winterlife

🌍 Costa Rica

🌍 New Zealand, Sailing

🌍 South Korea

The students have thus been divided into these 21 cultural subjects. As the process is democratic, and thus a process of separation between the Cultural Subjects, this also means that several Cultural Subject trips have not materialised. These were:

Mexico, South Africa Adventure, Peru, Egypt Diving, Greece Sailing, Bali Adventure, Portugal Surfing, Singapore, USA Street Performance and USA New York + Washington

One of our big Culture Days returnees is Nepal, where we have a friendship school. You can see here (or revisit) a video from the Culture Tour to Nepal in 2020 here:

Meet us at trade fairs!

Traditionally, we spend the weekends in January and February at various fairs in the Danish country. Here is a small overview of the fairs we are at:

In addition to the efterskole fairs, we will also be at the Boat Show Denmark fairs on 24 - 26 February, and 2 - 5 March.

The fairs are a unique opportunity to meet the school off campus, and have a good chat with both students and staff at the school. But if you still want a glimpse of the school's surroundings and facilities, here's another opportunity:

Efterskole evening is on 11 January from 18-21, and is a great opportunity to see the school. We'll be inviting you in for some lovely efterskole atmosphere, and there will also be presentations in our Festive Hall, tours and the chance to meet former pupils. You can already register for the Afterschool Evening by pressing here

Christmas greetings from here

We send virtual Christmas hugs all the way from Ranum, and out to all of you out there. Have a great weekend,

Best regards from all of us at,

Ranum Efterskole College
