In the wake of Travel Week

Dear reader,

The week after the students have landed from the many exciting cultural trips has been marked by jetlag, fatigue and a bit of flu for quite a few students.

Travelling is exhausting and at the same time it is great to feel the energy and enthusiasm that the students tell about their many experiences.

This week we have focused on landing and getting back into the rhythm of afterschool life. Classes and cultural subjects are well underway again, and a number of students chose to see a terrific musical at Fjerritslev Gymnasium on Wednesday and Thursday evening.

On Wednesday we also had a visit from United World College (UWC) in Denmark, who told the students about the possibility of an international IB education at one of the 13 UWCs in the world, after the 1st year of the STX education. There are many common features and values between UWC and Ranum Efterskole College, so it is attractive for more of our students to get this offer.

Thank you very much for visiting, AFS

On Tuesday we officially said goodbye to our January guests from AFS. We had 5 young people from Malaysia and 2 from Costa Rica this time. They have enjoyed their stay at the school where there has been an eventful programme. They have had a shorter period of teaching, been on host family visits, had excursions to Skagen, Lindholm Høje and Rold Skov and been on a European tour where they visited Prague, Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna. We have enjoyed their visits, where they have been outgoing and participated in all aspects of school life.

United World Colleges

On Wednesday, there was an important event for students who dream of studying abroad. United World Colleges visited the school.

United World Colleges (UWC) is a collection of 17 international boarding colleges, each with students from around the world. The schools are located around the globe from Costa Rica and Canada to Swaziland and Hong Kong. The idea is to bring together high school students from very different backgrounds and let them learn from each other both academically and socially over a two-year stay. The education offered at the schools is an IB (International Baccalaureate) - for Danish secondary school pupils it is equivalent to a second or third year, and it gives access to Danish and foreign universities on an equal footing with a Danish baccalaureate. If you are a Dane and want to go out into the world, you can apply when you are in 1.g or equivalent (or possibly 2.g). Scholarships are awarded by UWC Denmark, which means that the applicant's financial background has no bearing on his/her chances of being admitted to UWC.

PVA Competition - P2

It is always almost an experience in itself to see how the journeys unfold from the students' perspective. We make this possible with our Photo, Video & Article Competition.

Let's do it again! The photo, video and article competition is in full swing and we've already received many great entries. There are cash prizes and a brand new GoPro camera in the pot, so you'll have to make an effort too. All about the competition can be found at Facebook group. You will also soon be able to find all the participants' photos, videos and articles here.

We explore the world

As you may have already picked up, we came home last weekend from our travels around the world. 17 different places across the continents in fact. All of the cultural studies trips have a Facebook page where pictures and videos have been shared. There are lots of exciting posts to explore. We've put it all together for you at www.udforskverden.dk. Here you can get a unique insight and overview of the trips and the pupils' experiences.

Events next week

In the coming week, the focus will be on finishing the cultural tours and preparing for Family Day on Sunday 11 February.
During the week, there is a Contact Group Day on Tuesday afternoon, where we take stock of the first six months and look ahead to the last half year in a conversation with each student.
On Thursday afternoon, former Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council Andreas Kam will give a lecture entitled "When the world moves".

The lecture takes refugees and the migration crisis in Europe as its starting point and tries to paint a picture of the refugees' situation and where this development is leading. Will it pass - or will the challenge grow? The lecture is part of our special focus on the UN's 17 World Goals.

Today the pupils are playing in a big football tournament in Løgstør, and at the weekend they will be preparing for a new week, sorting photos from the trip and editing films for the big photo competition.

We wish everyone a very good weekend

Greetings all of us at

Ranum Efterskole College
