A week of casino, concert and everything in between

The week has been filled with fun and exciting activities - from casino weekends and guest coaches to concerts, expansion of the school's outdoor areas and new students who have strengthened the community. You can read about it all in the newsletter here.

Happy reading

Good cards in hand for casino weekend

Last Saturday, efterskolen was transformed into Las Ranum when the banqueting hall was transformed into the most cosy casino. In the week leading up to the event, the students had been taught the rules of the games so that everyone could participate - regardless of experience.

It was a really cosy and atmospheric day, where the excitement lasted well into the Saturday evening before the winners were announced. The prizes were of course something worth playing for: noodles, chips, popcorn, soft drinks - and of course trophies for the three best players.

Later in the evening, the casino experience was extended with soft drinks and a snack bar, and Las Ranum was buzzing with party atmosphere until the end.

Efterskole trade fair in Silkeborg

We had a blast at the efterskole exhibition in Silkeborg last week! Many thanks to the many visitors who came by, it was a pleasure to meet you all.

This weekend we're moving on to the efterskole show in Roskilde, and we're really looking forward to meeting all of you on Zealand. Admission is free and it's open both Saturday and Sunday from 10-16.

Come by for a chat, ask all your questions and feel the efterskole vibe - see you!

Welcome to new international students

Once again, we have the pleasure of expanding our school community with a new group of students from around the world. We welcome two students from India and one student from Indonesia who are participating in an AFS programme and will be attending classes here at the school in the coming weeks.

In addition, we also have three girls from Austria visiting as part of a six-week Erasmus+ programme.

Last, but certainly not least, we extend a warm welcome to Emma from Uruguay. It's currently summer holidays in Uruguay, but Emma was ready for an adventure and applied for a place at the school for the coming weeks. You can hear a lot more about Emma next week when we share a little portrait of her.

If you would like to invite one or more of the sweet students home for a weekend during the coming weeks, you are very welcome to contact Birthe by email:

bp@ranumefterskole.dk. They would love to try a Danish weekend with a Danish family.

Guest coach for the girls' football team

The girls' football team was visited by guest coach Godtfred, who gave the players a powerful insight into strength training and prevention of the most common injuries in female football players. Godtfred is a teacher at a primary school in Thy, has played football at a high level and has extensive experience of coaching both girls' and boys' teams - also at a high level. He also has a solid knowledge of strength training, so it made perfect sense to invite him in so the girls could benefit from his knowledge and experience.

It was full throttle in efterskolen's training room Svederen, where the heart rate was high and the girls were given specific exercises that can improve both performance and durability on the track.

Swimming and diving in the swimming pool

Every week the students at Ranum have activity classes, and in this one you get an insight into the swimming lessons in Aars. The students started by warming up with a couple of lanes of crawl, after which they worked on their swimming techniques through various games and exercises. They played tic-tac-toe in the water, practised diving from the edge and diving from the lashes. As part of their swimming programme, the students also tried synchronised swimming and water polo as a natural part of the lessons.

Baked pizza at our new shelter site

In the autumn, we established a brand new shelter area between the large spruce trees with five new shelters and a fire pit. It's always great to have new areas that the students can help inaugurate and that provide opportunities for experiences in nature. The shelter is a good example of how we continuously develop the school's facilities for both teaching and leisure.

This week, the Outdoor Skills team had the opportunity to put the shelter to the test when they made baked pizzas over a campfire. The students warmed up by lighting the fire and preparing the ingredients before baking the pizzas directly on the embers. The sun shone and it was a very cosy and successful activity.

Rap band NS Gang got the party started on Wednesday night!

The air was thick in the ballroom when the band NS Gang stepped on stage surrounded by smoke from the smoke machines. From the first note, they kicked off the party and quickly got the dance floor glowing. The students took the first few minutes to settle in, but it wasn't long before everyone was jumping, dancing and singing along to the band's energy. The atmosphere was electric and the music kept the party going all night long.

The hunting licence team on a full day trip

The hunting licence students took a whole day out of their schedule to visit the Brasholt hunting shop in Hjørring. Here the students had the opportunity to explore the store's entire selection, from hunting clothing and optics to various hunting equipment.

The highlight for many, however, was the visit to the armoury and shooting cellar, where students could see and try out equipment in a controlled environment. It was an educational and exciting day where theory and practice were combined and the students got a unique insight into the world of hunting.

For both students and teachers, a flexible school timetable at Ranum is a great advantage, making it possible to set aside whole days for field trips. These kinds of trips create both enthusiasm and engagement - and at the same time give students a different and practical experience of teaching.

Northern lights over Ranum

It's getting cold over Denmark again, and for most of the week the sky has been starry. We were lucky when the Northern Lights appeared over Ranum - and fortunately an alert citizen, Reasat Hasan, was quick to capture it on camera. Thanks for the great pictures.

Memory hoodies

Every year we do a so-called memory hoodie - A shirt where students can have their names on the back. That way, we can all mirror each other and have a nice memento to take with us from the school year.

The process of collecting signatures is already underway and we are now over halfway through. There are still a lot of students to sign, and we hope that the shirt will eventually be completely full.

The shirt does not need to be purchased as it is included in the school stay, but it must be ordered. You can do this via Skoleplan, where a link has been sent out.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

Freedom is often experienced most strongly within the context of a community. Teenagers often seek the non-committal freedom to meet or withdraw, depending on their desire - or discomfort - in shared duties. At the same time, young people also need a fixed framework that creates security and predictability, where questions of choice, discomfort or desire give way to the collective expectation that the student participates in meals, cleaning, gatherings and activities.

This week, in addition to discussing the US and tensions with NATO and the Commonwealth, we have focused on the obligation each student, contact group and staff member has to support the community - in meals, gatherings and activities.

This can cause friction for some students who see the 1TP5Life framework as limiting freedom. But for the majority, having adults who take responsibility for including those who might otherwise fall outside the community creates joy and security. Since the summer, we have based the community on the students' interest and desire to participate. Now, for a period of time, we are focusing on including students who have previously withdrawn.

The experiences of the individual and the group become an important basis for balancing individual freedom with collective obligation. These experiences provide life skills and resilience in further education and communities.
