24 Oct A new season is upon us, which means new choices and subjects on the timetable
After the students' travels in week 41, the classrooms at Ranum Efterskole College have come alive again. The week has offered both endings and new beginnings - from the final lessons in the profile subjects to inspiring presentations and visits from outside. We are already looking ahead to this spring's big cultural studies trips.
Finalising the profile courses
The students have now had their last lessons in the profile subjects. It was a week of retrospection, where experiences from both teaching and travelling were rounded off. The profile courses mark the end of an intense and eventful programme that has given the students skills, community and memories to take with them. It also marks the end of the first quarter of the school year, when many students realise how quickly time flies. It also means that there are new subjects on the timetable and new choices that will once again offer exciting challenges, communities and experiences.
The pictures here are from the profile subject trips in week 41.

Close match in Padel final tournament
On Monday, the final Padel tournament was held after the trip to Malaga. First, Team-Americano was played and the four best teams advanced to two close semi-finals. The final was very well played and evenly matched, and the happy winners were Noah and Malthe - congratulations. A big thank you from teacher Mette to the whole team for a great programme and many good matches.

A gripping lecture with Daniel Rye
On Tuesday, Daniel Rye visited and told his gripping story of being taken hostage in Syria by Islamic State. The ballroom was silent as he shared his experiences and reflections. Daniel said that he hopes his story can remind us to keep our spirits up even when the world seems hopeless. It was an experience that made a strong impression on students and staff alike.

Ranum representatives at EDU Festival in Prague and Bratislava
In week 41, Ranum Efterskole College's International Coordinator, Birthe, and Summer School Coordinator, Tine, represented the school at the EDU Festival in both Prague and Bratislava. The festival was organised in collaboration with our partner Education.cz, which is also behind several of the international students who find their way to Ranum - including our current semester student from Slovakia.
At the festival, they met many young people and their parents who showed great interest in efterskole life in Denmark. The stand and presentations attracted many curious visitors, and Ranum Efterskole College also participated in panel discussions on international educational opportunities and cultural exchange.
Tine and Birthe tell us, “It was inspiring to meet so many young people dreaming of a stay at a Danish efterskole - and we look forward to welcoming more new students through our collaboration with Education.cz.”

Basketball camp in Ikast
The basketball team spent Wednesday in Ikast together with students from other schools, where they visited the basketball academy. The day started with a short presentation of the academy, after which the students were divided into groups. Before lunch they did tests in speed, jumping and dribbling and after lunch they played a tournament with three teams. Each game lasted ten minutes and the students won several games, but unfortunately did not make it to the final.

When efterskoler can learn from each other
This week we were visited by representatives from Oure Efterskole, Skals Efterskole, Vedersø Idrætsefterskole, who came for a tour here at Ranum, just as representatives from Ranum have visited their schools. The purpose was to share experiences, inspire each other and see how we each work with efterskole life. It was a rewarding day where many good ideas and perspectives were exchanged.
Thank you to the international students who gave tours and did a great job showing off the school and answering questions.

Fish and Chips at Trangia
This week, Outdoor Skills have been testing their cooking skills in the great outdoors, where the menu was classic fish and chips cooked on trangia. The students filleted fish, made crispy chips and got a taste of cooking in nature. It was a cosy and tasty activity where teamwork and passion were the key ingredients.

The democratic culture profession process is underway
On Friday, the Multihallen was transformed into a colourful myriad of culture and curiosity when the cultural studies storytellers presented the many countries that students can choose to work with in the run-up to the cultural studies trip in March. The students explored the stalls and became curious about the different countries' food, music, languages and stories - many of them discovered new places in the world that they will now delve into during their lessons. How cool is it to have true democracy at school - and choose what you want to learn about?

Halloween preparations in contact group time
Contact group time was spent carving pumpkins for autumn decorations for some of the students. Some of the students listened to Michael Jackson's “Thriller” to get in the right mood. It was a fun and creative afternoon.

Headmaster's column
Autumn darkness has descended on Ranum and the wind is shaking the leaves off the trees. But inside, the light - and new, stronger friendships - are alive and well after the successful Profile subject trips and a much-needed autumn break.
We encouraged students to be good to each other and especially to the adults on the trips - and they succeeded in 99.9 % of the trips. This is the first big step towards stepping into the adult role, taking responsibility for the community and daring to move out of the usual framework, where travelling for the vast majority is associated with a holiday context.
This week we finished the first term and started the middle term of the school year with a big workshop on the choice of the upcoming Culture subjects. Students and staff met in the hall and presented their ideas for cultural subjects that will form the framework for world-orientated learning and education from November to December.
Students will choose their subjects in a democratic process, and the choice will train them to prioritise between interests, dreams, friends' choices and finances. Their stomachs will hurt along the way, doubts must be given space - and parents must keep their distance until the final vote to give their approval of the young person's choice. Follow the process here in the newsletter - because it doesn't happen at any other school in Denmark.
Tonight, Friday, the volunteer parent council of Ranum Efterskolers Friends The first student party - outside of school. More than 450 students are taking part, and we hope they have a fantastic, safe and festive evening surrounded by around 50 parent volunteers.
Tomorrow, Saturday, we're holding the first anniversary meeting because we're now so ”old” that we have enough 20th, 15th, 10th and 5th anniversaries to fill the school for a cosy reunion day with good food, assembly and guided tours.
Have a great weekend.
