School photo, student party, visit from AFS students and trip to Bilbao

Dear reader,

In this week's newsletter, you get insight into a very quiet week at Ranum. It seems very likely that the week has been so quiet because of the student party last weekend. On Sunday, the school was enriched with 25 new students who will spend the next month here at Ranum Efterskole College, where they will get an insight into Danish culture. But while we are having visitors, some of our students have gone on a trip to Bilbao in Spain. In addition, the students have also had their school photo taken for their Blue Book, which they will receive at the end of the year.

Enjoy the newsletter - we wish you all a great weekend.

Visits from Thailand and India

Last Sunday, we were lucky enough to be visited by 25 AFS students from Thailand and India. The students will be part of our everyday life for the next month. Among other things, they will experience Danish culture, taste Danish food and much more. We hope they will have some wonderful weeks and get a little insight into Denmark and Ranum's culture.

School photo

Tuesday was the day to look your best and find the perfect angle. The day was spent taking this year's school photo, which will be used in the students' Blue Book.

Do you know someone who hasn't had their school photo taken yet? Then there's another opportunity to get your photo taken on Monday 11 March from 11am-12pm in the media room. This is the last chance to get your school photo taken.

Spanish team travelling to Bilbao

We travelled to Bilbao with 16 former and current Spanish students from REC to participate in an exchange with Spanish families. All the Spanish buddies attend the Centro Formación Somorrostro just outside Bilbao, and our students are staying with the families. So far, the trip has included a tour around Bilbao, visiting the Guggenheim Museum, the 7 Streets, etc. We have also eaten the local tapas pintxos and of course had free time to explore the city on our own with their buddies. Today we are visiting Somorrostro, where we have been dancing and visiting different classes, and tomorrow the families have asked to spend time with our young people and show them around before travelling back home on Sunday.

¡Buen fin de semana!

Photos from the student party

Last Friday, the PTA organised the 3rd student party of the year, and it was a fantastic and festive evening! The dance floor was hot, the music was turned up to the max and the selfie booth was in use all night, resulting in lots of memories for the students when they look back.

The student party is not organised by Ranum Efterskole College, but by the parents' council in the students' free time away from school. Organisation and responsibility lies solely with the PTA.

Dear reader,

Today is Women's Day!

The media talks about the gender balance tipping in favour of women in terms of education and longevity, but not yet in terms of equal pay. It is clear to us in Ranum that many girls are very strong and brave. Throughout the years, we have also had a small majority of girls at approx. 3-5% compared to the boys, and this is because the girls are enrolled in the efterskole year 1-2 years before the boys are. We're a bit puzzled by this, and there's probably more than one explanation. But one is that girls and mums plan in better time than boys and dads, and that just opens up more opportunities. So dear boys, dads and mums, please take care of that balance, because we want more boys in 9th and 10th grade at Ranum, thank you.
We also find that boys and girls play each other stronger when they are on the same field. We see this clearly in sailing, for example, where girls and boys play really well together in the crews on the many different tasks on board.

This week we have been visited by AFS guest students from Thailand and India. They landed just in time for the last snow and hoarfrost, and it's quite an adventure for them to experience. For the next 4 weeks, they will be living with our students, participating in the international English-language education programme, so they can understand and experience what efterskole life and youth life in Denmark is all about. They get a culture shock, but also bring a different culture into the everyday lives of the other students. This provides ample opportunity to challenge their own views and understandings of life in our part of the world. It makes us all richer!

This weekend is music-themed and we wish everyone a fantastic creative weekend.

Olav Storm.
