Sea of sea, International evening and big waves

Dear reader.

Welcome to this week's newsletter from Ranum. We are happy and grateful that you follow us, and therefore we have made an effort to tell all the good and funny stories from afterschool life at Ranum. There are many great stories and pictures, so please read along. Let's jump into it.

Family weekend and a beautiful sea race

Already on Friday afternoon the first families arrived in Ranum. There were caravans, tents and filled up at various hostels and bead and breakfast establishments. The families enjoyed an evening of Nepalese bano and a delicious dinner in the canteen.

Vilsted Lake Run 2019

You may have been following the race on social media, and if so, you've already seen some of the pictures from last weekend's Vilsted Sø Løb. So here's an overview of the day in numbers:

  • 1248 participants
  • Approx. 900 parents and students
  • 15:11 Fastest 4.6 km. walk - Luna Lomholdt
  • 2:01:19 Fastest 13 km. walk - Theodor Petersen
  • 20:27 Fastest 4.6 km. race - Alexander Chen Duedahl
  • 53:37 Fastest 13 km. race - Anders Kronholt
  • 1:54:23 Fastest 1/2 marathon - Birk Lindebjerg

After the race, the day continued with the family weekend, where there was an opportunity to experience the profile and culture of the professions. It's not long until we leave on our first trip, so it was a good opportunity to get an insight into the skills and interests students take with them and try out in the country or destination they are travelling to.

Thanks again to all of you who visited us over the weekend!

International evening

The international diversity at Ranum is hard to miss when wandering the corridors. We have students from all over the world, and visiting teachers and students come regularly to experience after-school life at the school. It's unique and something we cherish. It is a fundamental value for us that we should look out into the world and the world should look into Ranum.

We had 15 workshops themed on different countries' cultures, a food court with food from all over the world, concerts with singing and dancing and a competition to learn how to say "hello" in different languages. It was a fantastic after-school evening where we really learned about the many cultures that flow around the school and bring the international community to life.

"I think it was fun, and it is was cool to see all the different activities from different countries. I'm from Mexico, and I obviously I thought it was fun to see people eat the hot chilis, they were crying because of it" told Miguel, who is one of the international students at Ranum.

This is what we mean when we talk about togetherness. In the photo album you can explore and get a visual sense of what a great evening we had.

International evening

Host Families Wanted

We have been visited by 26 students from South Korea. They come from Ggumple Efterskole in South Korea and start their school year with 3 weeks stay in Ranum.
They have been really looking forward to visiting Denmark and seeing how we live. That's why we'd like to offer them the chance to visit host students and families this weekend, from Friday 20 to Monday. They would like to be together two by two, but it is also possible to host a single student.
The school pays for transport with the after-school bus and there is 500 kr. with each student for practical expenses and some extra fun during the weekend.

We still need 9 host families, and preferably for boys.
They can sleep on a mattress and you don't have to arrange everything. They come to experience life in Denmark and in a family. They may see the student's former school, a workplace or just the town/area where you live.

Email me at os@ranumefterskole.dk or text me 23320597 and help us give young people a good experience of Denmark.

Big waves in Klitmøller

"Big waves that were easy to read, so the small boards came into play. Only downside of the day: lots of other surfers in the water who also thought surfing was cool. I think we call that a luxury problem."

See more photos from the day here.

What to choose?

The choices are many and the options are multiple. Choosing a cultural subject can be a tough nut to crack, but at the end of the day, it's all about choosing a country and a culture that you are passionate about experiencing and working with. Here you can hear a bit about the considerations students make when choosing a cultural subject.

Remember Afterschools Day

Do you know a young person who deserves an unforgettable year of afterschool? Tell them about Afterschools Day on 29 September, and point them in the direction of Ranum. It will be a day with lots of after-school life and the opportunity to talk to teachers and students. We start at 10 and continue until 17.

Events next week

Next week starts on Tuesday, and the vast majority are going home for the long weekend today. On Wednesday, there is a concert by Ravi Kuma in the banquet hall, and this weekend there is a profile day and, of course, Afterschools Day on Sunday.

Have a great weekend

From all of us at Ranum Efterskole College
