Guadeloupe

In the culture module, we explore culture, language and nature.  

We will examine how Guadeloupe has developed historically, and what it actually means to be an overseas territory. In addition, we will delve into Creole culture and examine what makes this culture unique, and how it relates to French culture. 

As most people in Guadeloupe speak French and not much English, we’ll also learn a bit of French – and perhaps even some Creole. 

We intend to get in touch with our host families and organise school visits and interviews with local people. As part of this, we will also look into the local customs and traditions in Guadeloupe. 

The cultural study trip to Guadeloupe focuses on nature, culture, history, sustainability and interacting with the local population. Through a variety of activities and encounters, pupils have the opportunity to experience and explore Guadeloupe from a range of perspectives. The trip combines academic, cultural and physical challenges with teamwork, independence and responsibility.  

We’re going to visit our partner school in Sainte-Anne, where we’ll get an insight into what it’s like to go to school in Guadeloupe. The pupils will visit and stay with host families from the school. Here, they will gain a better understanding of what it means to be young in Guadeloupe – and, not least, have a chance to practise their French vocabulary. 

We will also, amongst other things, be hiking on La Soufrière, Guadeloupe’s active volcano. The hike will give the pupils the opportunity to experience the island’s varied and ever-changing natural environment and gain an insight into the geological and climatic conditions that characterise Guadeloupe. At the same time, this challenging hike will test the pupils’ stamina, perseverance and ability to support one another. 

In Pointe-à-Pitre, the pupils explore Guadeloupe’s history and cultural expressions. The pupils explore the town’s markets and street art and visit the Mémorial ACTe, where they gain an insight into the history of slavery and its significance for the development of Guadeloupe and the Caribbean. The visit also provides an opportunity to meet and talk with local people. 

As part of the journey, the pupils carry out the project Meet the Locals. Pupils choose a topic, draw up questions and interview local residents. The aim is for pupils to seek out knowledge independently and meet people they would not otherwise come into contact with. The project also helps to develop communication skills, curiosity and intercultural understanding.
