Exam period, visit from Canada and Constitution Day

The past week at Ranum Efterskole College has had many great highlights. Among other things, we have been visited by a group of Canadian students from a like-minded school in British Columbia, we have celebrated Constitution Day, and last but not least, our students have enjoyed fresh air at an altitude of 4,500 metres.

Happy reading!

Students in free fall

The adrenaline was pumping on Saturday when the day finally came for a large group of students to complete their skydives and receive their certificates.

The big smiles on the pictures tell you all about what an amazing experience it has been.

In recent years, we have organised a skydiving trip in both autumn and spring. This allows students who couldn't participate the first time to get a second chance - or for those who just needed a little extra courage to take the plunge later in the year.

Kudos to everyone who took the challenge and threw themselves into the experience. It takes a lot of courage to take the leap.

Super cool!

Canadian students experience efterskolelife

On Monday, we welcomed a group of young guests from Canada who will be part of everyday life at Ranum Efterskole College for the next week and a half.

The students come from the town of Summerland, British Columbia and attend UNISUS School, an international private school with a focus on IB programmes and global education. During their stay in Denmark, they participate in classes, activities and the school community while experiencing Danish culture and efterskole life first-hand.

The programme is packed with experiences. The Canadian students have already visited Østerild Wind Energy Test Centre, the bunker museum in Hanstholm and Aggersborg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They will also try out activities such as sailing, windsurfing, climbing and volleyball, as well as exploring the school's creative subjects such as Fashion & Design. At the weekend, the trip will continue to Aalborg and Aarhus, where they can experience even more of Denmark.

UNISUS is committed to developing young people with a global outlook and courage. This is an ambition we share at Ranum Efterskole College, where international perspectives, cultural curiosity and communities across borders are an important part of the school's DNA.

The exam period is in full swing

The oral exam period is a very special time at Ranum. The days are characterised by excitement, anticipation and a few extra butterflies in the stomach, as the oral exams for many feel more challenging than the written exams, which are already well over.

This week the students have been taking oral maths exams. Between exams, there's plenty of time for preparation, sparring and professional discussions with both teachers and peers.

Meanwhile, efterskolelife continues with day trips, activities and community that provide a well-deserved break between exams.

Activity days of the week

Not everything has to be about studying and exams, which is why we try to get students active every day so they get out and about, use their bodies and still enjoy the freedom of a efterskoleår. The pictures below show a selection of the activities the students have been able to get involved in. For example, there has been training in the disc discipline strongman, a trip to the climbing park in Aalborg, a skateboarding trip in Viborg and much more.

Warming up for the gala

The big gala is just around the corner, and of course there is no gala without the lanciers. That's why everyone gathered in the hall on Thursday evening to hone their dance moves and warm up for one of the most special nights of the year.

The big smiles clearly reveal that the practice night was much more than just training - it was an evening filled with the joy of dancing.

Constitution Day is celebrated at Ranum

Friday this week is a special day! Not just because it's Friday, but because it's both Father's Day and Constitution Day. We celebrate the day Denmark got its constitution with a presentation from MP Theresa Berg Andersen. She was elected to the Danish parliament for SF and is the group chairman for the party at the castle. When she is not in Copenhagen, she lives in Ranum's neighbouring town Vilsted. She gave a great speech that was at eye level with the students and said something about the community at a efterskole like Ranum and about the democracy we must protect in Denmark.

If you want to read the speech you can find it at this link: https://www.facebook.com/ranumefterskole?locale=da_DK

The rest of the day was spent on an orienteering race around the school grounds, where the students had to solve tasks and answer questions about Denmark, Danish culture and not least discuss what it really means to be Danish.

An activity that creates good reflections and exciting conversations - both among our international students and the Danish students who get the opportunity to see their own culture with new eyes.

Make your summer special

You've probably heard of summer schools before - perhaps especially from American films where young people spend several weeks together during the summer holidays. But a summer school is much more than that.

At Ranum Efterskole College, you'll experience what it's like to be part of an international community with young people from all over the world. It combines learning, activities and new friendships in a summer full of experiences.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

Then we got a new government. Young people have noticed that they will soon have free transport, and in the school world there is optimism due to promises of more resources, more freedom and a focus on the most vulnerable students.

These are positive signals for both public and independent schools - and not least for young people.

On Constitution Day, it's worth remembering that freedom of education is an important part of Danish democracy. Free schools give families the opportunity to choose different learning environments and values, while contributing to strong communities and active citizenship.

When we strengthen both public and independent schools, we also strengthen the freedom, diversity and trust that are the foundation of Danish society. At Ranum, we have a multicultural and diverse student body, and in meeting other young people's stories about their rights and duties, we better understand the importance of our Constitution as a pillar of our social model, which many other cultures look far behind.

Constitution Day is not only a celebration of the nation, but also an inscription of the “toddler state” into the rule- and convention-driven world community. Therefore, we also celebrated Constitution Day with speeches by our local MP Theresa Berg Andersen and with an insight into what the Danish Constitution has meant to Vice Principal Matt Danaher, who has been granted Danish citizenship through a bill in the Danish Parliament.

To make the many words come alive, the students also took part in an o-race with tasks from the Citizenship Test, which tests knowledge of Danish society, culture and history.

Yours sincerely
Olav Storm
