Students decorate, celebrate culture and test democracy

This week, the students at Ranum have experienced everything from intense Christmas cosiness and musical performances to dramatic travel stories and practical democracy. The atmosphere has been filled with curiosity, surprises and powerful experiences that have brought laughter, reflection and new perspectives. Read on to discover how school comes alive when students explore the world around them and each other in creative and inspiring ways

Happy reading!

Christmas-hygge Weekend

The students spent Friday evening and Saturday decorating the school, baking cookies and eating apple slices. It turned out so beautifully, and the students did a great job. Meanwhile, they sang and danced to Christmas music, and the whole weekend was buzzing with a cosy Christmas atmosphere and community spirit.

Students proudly showed off their school to grandparents

On Sunday we had a lovely grandparents' day with lots of coffee and cake, good chats and many tours. The students were proud to show off their school and the grandparents were beaming with pride for their grandchildren. In total, 650 grandparents from Denmark and neighbouring countries visited us - a great pleasure. There was also the opportunity to take a family photo, and luckily many took advantage of it. Thank you so much for the visit!

Company visits in Aars

A group of our business students visited the company Airmaster A/S in Aars, which works with decentralised ventilation based on knowledge and innovation. The purpose of the visit was to see how theory is put into practice - a unique opportunity for the students to experience “real world application” of what they learn in class.

Social mixer across cultures

On Wednesday evening, the ballroom was filled with music, dance and flavours from around the world when our AFS students organised a cultural festival. Students from India, Argentina, Thailand, Uruguay and Indonesia offered insights into their home countries, and around 100 of the school's other students attended and created a great atmosphere.

The culture party was a vivid reminder of what a year at Ranum is all about: meeting new cultures, sharing experiences and talking across borders. A big thank you to the AFS students for sharing their knowledge, joy and traditions - and for giving us all an inspiring evening.

Anna Søby's stories from the big world

We had a visit from Anna Søby Poulsen, who attended Ranum eight years ago. She shared her experience from her gap year trip to Peru and Costa Rica, but also about the unexpected and dramatic stopover in Panama, where she was stopped at the airport and imprisoned in a women's prison. Anna emphasised the importance of always researching the laws of the countries you are travelling to and gave students an insight into both the exciting and challenging aspects of travelling in the wider world.

The dance team enjoyed the performance FAME

The dance team, who recently travelled to Berlin on a profile trip, had money left over from the trip and spent it on a fun and adventurous evening trip to Holstebro. The students first enjoyed dinner at McDonald's before heading to the musical FAME. It was a great experience where they soaked up the dance, music and songs and ended the day with big smiles and singing back home in the bus.

Students actively participate in local elections

On Thursday, the students got a practical introduction to the democratic process in connection with the municipal elections in Denmark. They watched the election debate from Vesthimmerland in the assembly hall before going to the school ballot box and casting their votes. It was an important opportunity to discuss, reflect and take a stand on local and societal issues. In addition, one of Ranum's teachers is running for election and he gave the students the opportunity to ask questions. All votes were counted and the students got an insight into how an election works - both an exciting and educational experience!

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

Grandparents are an amazing “breed”: persevering, persistent, life-experienced, bridge-builders, curious, teen-friendly, loving and very good at singing songs and baking cakes - and probably much more! The Grandparents' Day was a success with over 650 visitors, and the students were great at showing around and socialising with their guests. During the assembly, they sang and talked about the school's values and the grandparents' superpowers in guiding and supporting their grandchild in the efterskole life.

The municipal election process is underway, and we helped organise a local voter meeting for Ranum and the surrounding area. Not many election promises were made to Ranum, but a “handshake” was given that we will be listened to when we come up with ideas and wishes for the development of the town and efterskolen.

This week, the results of the final selection for cultural subjects have been published, and even though several students this year have been given their 2nd priority because many students changed their choice to the most popular cultural subjects in the last round, there has been a lot of calm around the results. Of course, we also deal with those who really feel that they got stuck in the process.

This coming week - Friday - the majority of the staff will go on an experience trip to two other efterskoler and a højskole and to this year's Christmas fun event in Aalborg Theatre. The students will also have an eventful day with a super exciting lecture and a record-breaking experience that will surely be talked about long afterwards.

The Christmas decorations hang high all over the school and light up the November darkness. Soon it's performance week and the Christmas market - we're really looking forward to it.

Have a great weekend.
