A week full of physical challenges

The penultimate week of the school year at Ranum Efterskole College has now come to an end, and there is no doubt that this week, too, has brought plenty of wonderful memories.

The week has been marked in particular by physical challenges, including a visit from the police and a swim that was out of the ordinary.

Happy reading!

A quiet start to a weekend of outdoor activities

Weekend brunch is a regular and cosy tradition at Ranum. This weekend, we also captured just how inviting and delicious the brunch actually is.

At the weekends, the morning pace is a little more relaxed, and pupils have the chance to sleep in a bit longer than on weekdays. This creates a relaxed atmosphere and a particularly cosy ambience, which many people really appreciate.

A real challenge for an outdoor weekend

After a lovely brunch, the pupils put on their wetsuits and set out on an ambitious challenge: a swim from Rønbjerg Harbour across the Limfjord to Livø.

The distance is around 4 km, which typically takes experienced swimmers 2–2.5 hours. On the day, however, there were high waves and unsettled weather, and for safety reasons the route was therefore unfortunately changed. The swim was instead carried out in the Frederik VII Canal, where the water is calmer and better suited to the activity.

We’ve got some brilliant pupils here at school!

A visit from the police

Don’t worry – nobody’s been up to any mischief on efterskolen.

The police actually dropped by to give the pupils an insight into the entrance exam for the Police Academy. Part of the admissions process consists of a physical test, which the pupils had the opportunity to try out for themselves. Among other things, they had to test their fitness, strength and stamina through a series of exercises that prospective police officers face during the entrance exam.

Thank you for visiting!

On the prowl in the strawberry field

The week has featured a wide range of activity days. Among other things, the pupils have had the chance to visit a water park, decorate their memory books, try their hand at windsurfing or – as shown in the photos below – visit the local strawberry field to pick berries for all the pupils and teachers, bake bread on a stick and pancakes over a campfire, and complete the honey-making process so they could take a jar of honey home with them.

Headmaster's column

Dear reader,

The final weeks of the school year are always a time of great emotional ups and downs for both pupils and staff.

There’s such excitement when pupils spring a surprise and manage to create truly unique moments of togetherness for their friends.

Frustration when some (few) pupils repeatedly do annoying things that undermine the sense of community, because we have to draw a line under it – right up until the very end.

A sense of professional pride in the exams, when the whole class helps one another to achieve the best they can at their exam desks.

Resignation and despondency when parents exempt their child from an exam that they have been taught for and worked hard towards throughout the entire school year.

We naturally understand that there may be a limit to how much the pressure and the “struggle” in the run-up to exams should take up our time. Unfortunately, however, we are finding that last-minute withdrawals from exams are becoming increasingly common. This may be a natural consequence of the government’s master plan to make Year 10 a “superfluous” year, but it is sad that it is, in particular, those pupils who most need to become “school-ready” who do not get the chance to practise sitting exams.

The pupils who have chosen the “Prøvefri” and ‘Project Management’ modules throughout the year, on the other hand, are fully occupied with activities and preparations for the final major event, the ‘Dream Festival’. It is a finale that really energises everyone and fosters a sense of togetherness throughout the school.

All in all, we’re looking forward to a fantastic final week, which kicks off on Sunday evening with a “Pick-up Dinner” for pupils and families living within a reasonable distance. On Monday, we’re all heading to Fårup Sommerland for a day of fun and games. On Tuesday, it’s the House Cup final, and the big trophy will go to the house with the most wins over the year.

On Wednesday, there’s a “brunch at home” hosted by the form tutors, and in the evening there’s an awards show and a revue.

Thursday is the last day to tidy up the rooms and get them ready for the Dream Festival.

On Friday, we’ll be doing a massive clean-up and handing in our room keys before we head off to the festival.

On Saturday, the school year draws to a close with the graduation ceremony on the lawn, and by 3 pm the school is empty, the pupils have cried their hearts out, and we adults are completely drained of energy.

It’s going to be a fantastic and incredibly tough final week, and that’s exactly how it should be!

Have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely
Olav Storm
