Cultural Meeting<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On the cultural trip to South Korea, the cultural meeting with South Korean youth is at the centre. Through this encounter, we will gain a better understanding of what it is like to be a young person and student in South Korea. We'll explore how South Korean popular culture has taken the world by storm, from K-pop and K-dramas, to the Cannes-winning film \"<\/span>Parasite<\/span>\" and the Netflix hit \"<\/span>Squid<\/span> game\" about inequality in South Korean society to South Korean <\/span>skincares<\/span> <\/span>found<\/span> at <\/span>TikTok<\/span>. We also explore South Korea's unique political history, how the relationship between South and North Korea affects life in South Korea, and what has fuelled South Korea's rapid economic development since <\/span>Korean War<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Academic programmes<\/h2>\n

In preparation for the trip, we focus on South Korea's history, politics, culture, customs and modern trends as well as its integration of Western culture. Of course, we will get acquainted with the long history of South Korea, which is intertwined with both Chinese and Japanese history, but also the more recent history of the division of the Korean peninsula into North and South Korea and the maintenance of the demilitarised zone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Culturally, we will have the opportunity to experience one of the most technologically advanced Asian countries, and at the same time, South Korea has established itself on the world stage with E-sports in the form of Starcraft and League of Legends (LoL) and K-POP in the form of artists and bands like BTS, PSY, EXO, BlackPink, Girls Generation as well as K-dramas and Korean films hitting the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There will be a thorough preparation for the cultural encounter and the promotion of intercultural competences in the students. And of course, we will prepare for South Korean cuisine with some cooking sessions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/h2>\n

TRAVEL<\/h2>\n

The trip to South Korea includes a cultural encounter with South Korean youth, as we will be staying at a school and spending time with young people of the students' own age. The school is located in the city of Dajeon, a few hours drive south of Seoul. Here you will be assigned a buddy and participate in daily activities and possibly classes. During our stay, we will be introduced to Korean food, karaoke, snacks and leisure activities and learn about Korean culture from the Korean youth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main part of the trip will be spent in Seoul. Here we will also meet with young people from a partner school, who we also have as pen pals in our classes before the trip. They will also show us around Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n

We will also visit Seoul's historical and modern landmarks as well as its famous districts and streets. In the past, we've visited the city's War Museum, the old city centre, the Lotte World amusement park, a cat caf\u00e9 and kareoke.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will also spend a day at the Geumsunsa Temple to be introduced to the Buddhist faith and traditions. Here we will be challenged on our knowledge and self-perception. We will also try to practise the 108 Buddhist bows, the 4am morning ritual and a beautiful morning hike up the mountain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team can also help suggest trips and focus for this year's programme. This could be attending an E-sports match (if tickets are available), a trip to the border between South and North Korea or a programme focusing on Tae Kwon Do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
