Malaysia – School attendance - a human right for everyone
During this culture subject you will ontain an understanding of, how it is to live in a country like Malaysia, depending on the family's social status. This applies to our preparation, our trip and our reprocessing after the trip. You will be well equipped for a cultural encounter with lots of different people and you will be trained to pass on your knowledge from this encounter.

The goal of this trip is to teach and help out at a school for refugees in Malaysia, where the economic situation is vastly different from what we are used to at home. The School is being run exclusively by volunteers and the goal is to offer schooling to everyone, regardless of origin and social status. In this way, you will gain insight into an alternative form of schooling, but also learn other teaching methods than the ones we are using in Denmark. Apart from this, the encounter with the culture and the internal class distinction in Malaysia will be in focus, with the intention of creating an awareness and a debate about our way of life.

The goal of our trip is personal development, moving personal boundaries and educate you through experiences with the foreign culture. Malaysia offers fantastic opportunities for this, since the country is made up of many different cultures, because of its history. During classes and during the trip you will be working with quality education, peace, justice and strong institutions as well as reduced inequalities, which is all part of the UN sustainable development goals and thus in line with the foundational ideas of Ranum Efterskole College.
The Lessons
Som et led i forberedelsen til rejsen og den fremmede kultur skal I fordybe jer i forskellige emner inden for den malaysiske kultur, traditioner, religion, geografi eller historie. I skal i den forbindelse forberede en fremlæggelse om et bestemt emne, der skal præsenteres for de andre elever på holdet. I skal derforuden lave undervisningsplaner og materialer til undervisning på venskabsskolen Hilla Community Centre School i hovedstaden Kuala Lumpur, hvor I, i grupper, får tildelt en klasse, som I er ansvarlige for. Undervisningen vil primært være i fagene matematik, engelsk, musik, natur/geografi, billedkunst og idræt. Venskabsskolen har allerede nu en relation til Ranum, hvilket også er tydeligt, da de har Ranum Efterskoles logo på deres trøjer samt har REC venskabsskole emblemet hængende på skolens væg. I skal også researche på et selvvalgt emne før og under rejsen, således I kan opnå og formidle jeres nye viden om emnet efter rejse.
The trip
Besides the lessons at the friendship school, you will have the opportunity to experience Malaysia and its culture on your own, through homestays, during the trip. In groups of 2-4 people, you will be staying at refugee families and malaysian AFS host families respectively. We are going to try to arrange an overnight stay with a tribe in the rain forest. During the trip, you will learn to utilise your own skills to help others, since you will e.g. be responsible for the lessons at the school for 3 days.
I vil derforuden få indblik i landet, gennem et foredrag på den danske ambassade, kulturelle oplevelser og sightseeing omkring Kuala Lumpur. I vil ydermere få mulighed for at bryde egne grænser gennem adventure discipliner, bad i varme kilder samt møde med regnskovens kryb og dyr.
After the trip
After the trip you must prepare a presentation of your trip, your experiences and your considerations about your self-chosen topics. We are going to work with presentation techniques before the trip. Here, you will be working with printed medias, virtual medias in the form of a blog/homepage/Facebook and video report in connection to your presentation of the self-chosen topics. Subsequently, this must be presented as part of a newsletter, as a photo wall at school, as an introduction video for new students, as a presentation at school or as a presentation for the parents at Ranum Efterskole College.

Terms and economy
Egenbetaling på rejsen vil være ca. 7.500-kr 1. RATE ER 5000,-kr. 2. RATE ER 2.500 + evt. afbestillingsforsikring ca. 350,- kr. Lommepenge anbefalet ca. 1.000,- kr.

Safety
I vil alle få udleveret et mærkat med nødnumre i landet, skolens nummer samt numre på de pågældende lærere. Det er derudover en regel, at I kun bevæger jer rundt i større grupper under rejsen, hvilket også gør sig gældende i forhold til homestays, hvor I alle vil bo i gåafstand fra lærerne.
