Welcome to Ranum Efterskole’s International Class
Ranum Efterskole now proudly offers you the first year of your international education while spending a year on a Danish Efterskole. It is of outmost importance to our school to deal with your entire educational development – both professionally and socially. As the world has become smaller many students and parents look out on Europe and the rest of the world at an early stage in the student’s life, because they know that a good grasp on languages and intercultural qualifications will open up a wide variety of exciting educational possibilities. Spending a year in our R.I.C. (Ranum International Class) will give you some of these qualifications and strengthen your English – both spoken and written.
Internationally Recognized Exam
When attending the R.I.C. you can enjoy all the benefits of a year at Ranum Efterskole and in addition acquire a Cambridge Certificate in English. We aim at offering Cambridge University’s International General Certificate of Secondary Education also known as the IGCSE-exam. If you pass the exam it will give you access to 800+ educational establishments in 150 countries worldwide. The IGCSE is comparable with an English O-level exam, and a good grade (C or better) gives you access to almost all universities in England as well as the US, Canada, and Australia as a proof of sufficient English qualifications in order to be able to attend classes. We are in the process of developing the R.I.C. and the first year 2010/11 will be carried out on an experimental basis. In addition to the IGCSE-exam we expect you to pass a Danish FS10-test.
International Subjects and Projects
The R.I.C. will work with international and intercultural affairs in many subjects. At least half of all classes will be taught in English: Civics, Math, and Science - in order to increase the students’ vocabularies in many different areas. We will also aim at incorporating international aspects in the contents of the subjects, e.g. the European Union, the US political system, the climate debate, etc. All 10th grade students will be doing a project which deals with their future professional careers. Students attending the R.I.C. must hand in the project in written English. Only original English texts will be used in English classes and we will also establish internet based relations with students in other countries. All 10th grade students must attend the “Brobygning Program,” where they will spend two weeks at a Danish high school or similar educational institute. We cooperate with Hasseris Gymnasium, which gives our R.I.C. students the opportunity of trying out the high school’s international class.
International Organizations
Many students want to travel to and live in other countries after their year at Ranum Efterskole. R.I.C. will organize meetings with some of the organizations that exchange young people internationally. One of our partners is ASF, the biggest non-profit organization of youth exchange in Denmark. They will organize a conference at Ranum Efterskole during the month of September, where they will inform about their student exchange program.
Guest Teachers
One of the most efficient ways of improving your English is conversations with native speakers. During your R.I.C. courses we will invite guest teachers, who are native speakers of English. The aim is to both strengthen the oral aspect of the students’ education and to contribute to the intercultural content of the subjects – a person who has gone through the English educational system has a first-hand experience, which may seem more interesting to the students than an educational text about the same topic in a book.
Trips abroad
At Ranum Efterskole we travel a lot. All students are offered three trips abroad. Our aim is that the R.I.C. student will travel to an English speaking country at least once during the school year to receive intensive English classes. R.I.C. students can also join trips abroad with the rest of the school to for instance Norway or Nepal.
Requirements
We expect you to be at a level 7 in English or above. Attending the R.I.C. also means that you have to do more homework, but first and foremost that you are a dedicated and interested student. At Ranum Efterskole we travel a lot and some of the costs for the trips are paid by the parents. When you join the R.I.C. you must expect a mandatory co-pay of approximately DKK 2,000 for the first school trip and DKK 4,000 for the third trip abroad. The school’s winter trip is included in your school tuition.
Interested?
If the possibilities and experiences of the R.I.C. are of interest to you, please feel free to contact us, so we may sign you up for the program. In May we will invite you to a meeting, where you will receive further information about the R.I.C. program.
